preparing to unveil his tax plan. he didn't take them. i think that was deliberate on his part. he is trying to consolidate support on the right. he came in with strong support from social conservatives. he is trying to get economic conservatives and people on the right who share those concerns about where president obama was born. other mainstream republican candidates, mitt romney, for one, says we consider that issue put to bed. not mitt romney with several chances to put it down, he wouldn't do it. >> we were just watching a portion of your interview there. something else he said was that he didn't care about how america's wealthiest seemed to benefit from this tax plan. what he cexactly did he mean by this? >> i suppose he expounded on this. >> he did. he says he doesn't believe in progressive tax system. he doesn't care if his tax plans give millions of dollars to people at the top, because he thinks it will spark tremendous

economic growth and create more hiring. it is the argument that people in the middle and bottom will benefit if people at the top, because they are job creators will get tax cuts. rick perry has taken a few hits for not being the best student when he was in college. he says the person with the real comprehension problem is president obama. take a listen. >> has he got it right? >> no. we have already tried his plan before. it costs us $4 trillion. i don't think this president understands basic economics, not economics that work. he may understand some theory that someone in princeton sat and dreamed up but it is not working. >> veronica, that's the message that rick perry just gave a few minutes ago. he said we have to recognize the podium as it is. not as they wish it to be. he said, we are on the road to

we have specifics. >> perry's flat tax plan is a variant on trickle-downed economics on steroids. what essentially perry is saying is we are going to have a flat tax. it is going to reduce the taxes of very well think people in this country who have, by the way shall not been as wealthy as they are now in 50 years and never taken as high a share of total income as they have at least since 1928. we are going to reduce their taxes even more, because i believe, says rick perry, that trickle-down economics works. everybody is going to be benefiting by that. of course, with he know, we have experienced trickle-down economics for years, veronica. it doesn't work. in fact, median wages since george bush cut taxes mostly on the wealthy, the median wage continues to drop. >> the way he set it up, he is trying to show that it could possibly work because it does

give people the opportunity to make a choice, to pay the 20% or continue paying the taxes they have continued to pay all along. that means the rich in the top most bracket, which means they pay 35% on any income over $375,000, they now can opt under rick perry's plan, instead of paying 35%, they can go down to 20%. that means millions and millions of dollars for billionaires. i don't know about you but if we have a budget deficit we have to worry about and the average middle class person doesn't have the money to pay additional taxes to bring down the long-term budget deficit, if it is not going to be on the very top, they are going to get millions and millions of dollars of tax cuts, you have to be a tooth fairy to believe that.

>> obviously, you don't believe this is going to work. >> no, i don't. i don't believe it is going to work. i'll tell you something, veronica, i think that rick perry, by talking about the birther issue at exactly the same time he is giving these huge tax cuts to the rich. he is playing two trump cards at the same time or trying to. >> you are calling it a gop smoke screen in your article. >> well, the flat tax is a smoke screen. look, right now, we have a moderately progressive income tax, which means people at the top pay a higher proportion of their incomes, at least very high incomes, than people at the bottom. if you have a flat tax, that means just by logic, people at the top pay less and a lower tax rate and people at the bottom and in the middle pay more. well, that means people at the top are going to do very, very well. the nonpartisan center for tax policy looking at herman cain's

faster, dynamic way than in the past. >> you can't really control the messaging. we have been watching this unfold with the president's new campaign. we can't wait. i wanted to go ahead and read something that the republican national chair tweeted out. he was saying going off of what obama was saying, we can't wait, he was saying, we can't wait to make barack obama a one-term president. how do you control messaging. >> it is not like the political messaging or media doesn't have a big impact. msnbc has a political impact. you are doing a great job getting the message out. politicians are starting to learn the difference between a siev server and a waiter. the process of communicating doesn't just happen on television and newspaper quotes but, rather, online. they have built up their arsenal. in the same way, you said obama used it very effectively between 2008. between 2008 and 2010, the

republicans have caught up. this is the first election where both parties are going to use technology in every way possible to try to influential that discussion. >> how do you feel you win this game? what is the strategy? >> the strategy is to give as much power to your audience as you can, to your supporters, so they can spread the message, and build on it. >> is that dangerous? >> there is a certain amount of danger. if you are clear and concise and able to make sure that people undertan what your message is and they can build on it and then influence their friends, you are going to succeed. political campaign and operations have to think of themselves as media operations, not just campaigns. he with the most links wins. twitter, facebook, youtube, google searches, they all matter. those are the new elections. it was the cavalry against the tanks. >> he with the most links wins? >> correct. >> appreciate your insight. thank you. >> thanks for having me.

texas police trying to track down a sear yam rapist who is targeting alumni of a dallas suburb. the women are now in their 50s and 60s. what can you tell us about the suspect in this case? >> a real bizarre case. they are all alumni of a specific sorority between 50 and 60 years old. few other clues as police try and find this man before he strikes again. investigators in north texas have released this surveillance video as they continue to search for a serial rapist who has attacked at least four members of the delta sigma sorority. >> all home alone in their upscale neighborhoods. >> he kicked the door. no other knocking or warning. >> late monday, the sorority

rick perry is taking a mulligan on the last two months of his campaign, new staff, a new man at the the top, joe alba, the man who directed the bush cheney campaign. can the same lightning strike the same place in texas twice? joining us the man who helped break the story, paul berka of the texas monthly. good day to you. nice to see you. >> hello there. >> so you have been covering the story. when did rick perry say, enough is enough. we need to get new blood in there? >> well, it was sunday. what i was told, that he picked up the phone and called alba and asked him to come over to his house. they had a conversation. i really think that anita perry was also a big player in this. she saw where things were going and didn't like it and said they had to do something. so it was a decision that was done pretty much in the perry

family. >> you are also reporting that as of 3:00 p.m. sunday, perry had no economic plan. how can that possibly be? we just watched him announce his flat tax plan in south carolina. you are saying as of sunday, he had nothing. >> they were still working on it. steve forbes had been in. they had been working on it. i spoke to a perry source who said that they really didn't have it down exactly what their plan was. the governor had fully been briefed on it. so obviously he has done a pretty good job today of his rollout. >> also, in your reporting, you say that perry's biggest problem is that he values loyalty above talent. what do you mean by this? >> well, the governor has had really the same inner circle almost from the time that he came to power in texas.

he has been there for ten years. they have stuck with him. they have done very well in texas but this is a different ball game. at some point, loyalty asks too much. so he had to get people who were first-rate political operatives. he has done that. some of the people -- i don't think the people are going to be thrown off the stage. they are just, this is much more of a group of pros who know national politics and really when perry got into the race or even was thinking of getting into the race, he wasn't that involved in national politics. >> dave carney was his guy for a long time there in texas. when did he find out that the writing was on the wall? >> he still is. i think he is going to still be involved in the campaign. again, there is a question of

page of the newspaper. so if we are going to show stuff, let's show stuff. look, that's all a distraction. i mean, i get it. i'm really not worried about the president's birth certificate. it is fun to poke at him a little bit and say, hey, how, let's see your grades and your birth certificate. >> let's go ahead and start with you. what does that comment mean? can you really play both sides of the birther issue? >> it sounds like what he is doing is stoking the fire a little bit to the critics out there that still do not believe that the president was born in this country. we know the facts. we know he was born in hawaii. we know there is a birth certificate. rick perry is grasping for straws here. there is only two months left until the iowa caucus. his campaign is in peril. what he is trying to do is speak to the constituency out there that is very conservative, very skeptical of this president and the process may be open to a perry presidency.

he is soaking the fire a little bit. he is playing a little politics. it is not fair and right but i know what he is doing. >> let's bring bill in here. pretend that you are joe alba. it is a little over two months until primary caucus season. you are down in the pollses. i believe he is at 6% nationwide. now, you are dealing with this birther issue. you have to sell this flat tax. is it possible to iron this all out before iowa and new hampshire? where does he go with this strategywise? >> i know joe alba. he is very smart. at first, he would tell rick perry, knock off this birther nonsense. he doesn't need that. robert is right. look, the focus is beating barack obama, the focus -- you can't go so far to the lunatic fringe in the primary. i am joe alba speaking to rick perry, that you alien nate most people you are going to face in the general. on the flat tax, look, i would have two words of advice.

this is me speaking now for rick perry. steve forbes. remember how well it worked. steve forbes tried it in 1996. he tried it in 2000. this is an old, old idea. everybody knows there will never be a flat tax. there are too many lobbyists in washington who will shoot holes in it and carve out special exemptions. i think it's a stale idea for rick perry. i'm surprised he doesn't come up with something better. >> isn't the strategy to be the anti-romney, since romney is in the lead. >> well, it is to be the anti-romney but i think with a stronger and a clearer platform. rick perry is talking about privatizing social security, a balanced budget amendment and now a flat tax. ronald reagan talked about these but when he was in office, he never did them. you know why? because they don't work. >> let's get to herman cain. he is exactly where rick perry wants to be. he is at the top of the polls along with romney. i don't know if you have seen this one.

he has released this video starring his campaign chief of staff. let's take a look. >> we have run a campaign like nobody has ever seen. then, america has never seen a candidate like herman cain. together, we can do this. we can take this country back. robert, i'm not even going to ask you a question. i just want to get your interpretation of this video. what does this mean? >> it means disaster. i don't understand this at all. i don't undertan wstand why the campaign manager is in the cigarette. i don't understand the music or the logic behind this. this makes no sense whatsoever. it would be one thing if he was at the bottom of the pack trying to get some press attention to try to draw attention to himself. it is another thing he is at the head of the pack, trying to be

taken seriously. talk about shooting yourself in the foot, i don't understand this at all. >> everybody is talking about the cigarette, the cigarette. the cigarette offends me too. i think it is most astounding that this violates the first rule of politics. children should be seen but not her. campaign managers should be neither seen nor heard. i think robert would agree with that. who knows who mark block is and who the hell cares what he thinks about herman cain. he is on his payroll. this is a total waste of time and money. >> they are not scoring a victory or any points here. we are talking about it today. >> we are laughing at it and making fun of it. i don't think anybody is saying this proves that herman cain is presidential quality. >> we have to leave it there. we are out of time. always great to speak to you guys. a bit of drama. the trial against michael

jackson's personal physicians could be in the hands of the jury next week. court had to be recessed after jackson's nurse, cherilyn lee became overcome with emotion. she is on the defense that had called six witnesses. one of them was dr. alan metzger who treated him on and off for about 20 years. he testified the last time he spoke with jackson in april of 2009. >> he asked me about intravee nuzz sleep medicine. >> did he happen to mention the name of the medicine? >> i think he used the word juice. i don't think he heard the word of a specific medication. >> kristen dahlgren is outside the courthouse. what else did dr. metzger have to say? >> reporter: he is part of this defense contention that michael jackson or the defense trying to prove that michael jackson was an addict who was desperate for sleep, would have done anything, including perhaps taking those

fatal doses himself. the problem for the defense may be, though, that in cross-examination, the prosecution trying to point out that he never actually gave michael jackson any propofol even when he was asked about it. the prosecution asked him, did you tell him this was a dangerous drug? here is more of that exchange. >> did you ever give michael jackson propofol? >> never. >> was there any amount of money that would have convinced you to give him intravenous propofol in his house? >> absolutely not. >> reporter: so the prosecution trying to prove that dr. murray would have done anything for that $150,000 a month salary. so that's where we are going back and forth with these witnesses a little bit. again, as you said, a strange start to court this morning. cherilyn lee, the nurse practitioner, who michael jackson was also asking about

propofol. she said she wasn't feeling well. the traffic was very upsetting. the jury also got here late because of the traffic. the president said there is a little bit of gridlock. a strange start this morning. they are taking a little bit more of a recess waiting for cherilyn lee to feel better and she will be back on the stand being questioned about how michael jackson asked her about propofol, veronica. >> kristin dahlgren, live outside of the courthouse. thank you. legal analyst, ricky klee man, a former sex crimes prosecutor and criminal defense attorney. always nice to see you. >> thank you. >> we just heard from kristin outside of the courthouse. she is talking about these two witnesses, dr. alan metzger and this nurse. >> the defense is trying to do one specific thing, to show that michael jackson wanted propofol, because he was desperate to sleep. he knew about it.

he knew what it was to get an iv drip. he knew calling the drug juice, later milk. this is what he wanted. they would not give it to him. the defense point is he was desperate to get it. conrad murray was next in line. >> they are also going to rule out a new timeline. what do you make of this strategy? >> the timeline is critical for both sides. what the defense is doing with their timeline which is somewhat new but yet not so new. it is to show starting at the beginning michael jackson comes back in his rehearsal wired and exhausted. what dr. murray does through the night to try to help him sleep. the longer it goes on that michael jackson cannot sleep. we are starting at 1:00 in the morning until 10:00 a.m. that's a very long time. by that time, michael jackson is so agitated that he may have gone to another room, the private bedroom, popped the eight pills, come back in and in

teet total desperation, grabbed for the propofol. >> trying to folk holes in the prosecution's case. we are looking at some pictures of the nurse on the stand. she had a breakdown. she became emotional today in court. >> it is not surprise she would become emotional. she was very attached to michael jackson. she is not there on a pleasure trip. she is trying to be a good witness. she is trying to be fair. let me tell you, having spent seven years in los angeles, getting caught in l.a. traffic on a rainy day is not a joke. you are totally, absolutely frustrate. yet, she has to go in and has been subpoenaed by the defense. that's the last thing she wants. >> i want to get this question in. can the defense win this case? >> well, the defense might be able to get a hung jury in this case. it will be tough to get 12 people to go for acquittal. they just need one. there expert could carry that

active for the nominee who may not be one of their favorites. rick perry unveiled the flat tax plan an hour ago in south carolina. is this something that the tea partyers can get behind. >> sure. the issue, i think, is for the tea party movement, there will be several candidates who are favored. there will always be a strong support in that movement for ron paul, in some ways, the father of the movement. herman cain has attracted a great deal of attention with his 9-9-9 plan. i suspect the flat tax plan may be popular with rick perry as it was from steve forbes two decades ago. everybody is trying to play to get some tea party support. to get this grassroots behind them. we also suspect that at some point, whoever becomes the true front-runner, whether it is romney or cain, the tea party people start to flock there. they really want the republican nominee to win, whether or not

it is their favorite candidate. >> you do believe the tea party will support romney. >> let's assume romney is the no, ma'am any. we have written a lot about the fact that the tea party groups are starting to turn professional, professional political organizers. they are no longer just a bunch of volunteer activists. they are beginning to build websites and start fundraising drives and create mailing lists of their own. some of them are now full-time political operatives. they are becoming a political movement, less of an idealogical movement. you will start to see them get behind an establishment candidate. >> why not get behind romney now? why not push all the ideology aside and get behind him now. >> i believe they still see an opportunity to force the dialogue in their direction. this is for all kinds of, and i don't mean this as a rude term but fringe candidates or faction

live on the phone from the hardest hit city of ercis. what is the condition of this baby? >> reporter: doctors, when the baby was taken to the hospital say that the baby is doing very well, a lot better than what they expect. the little baby two weeks old, baby girl, pulled from beneath the rubble. she survived nearly two days after being trapped beneath the rubble of that building and apartment complex and search crews had been working throughout their feverishly throughout the day. search teams tell us that they had originally brought their dogs there to train them and that right away they got a hit or their keen sense of smell led them to these areas where they were able to find the baby and then a short time later, veronica, the mother, the mother

had, in fact, lifted the baby up to rescuers to give her daughter a chance to get to safety first. then, she was pulled out and then a short time later, the grandmother as well. it was unseen when the grandmother was pulled out. it is an amazing sense of emotion pulled out not for just family members around. they are waiting for word and something that gives them hope but also the rescue irrs who ha been on hand working tirelessly and effortlessly trying to save as many as they can. the weather and temperature is very cold. the death toll rising more than 400 thou and also thousands still missing, still many of them without shelter and seeking tent space in nearby shelters. a lot playing out here. some sense of joy along with the destruction and despair here, veronica. >> michelle franzen, live for us from ercis, turkey.
